Hvor ‘Each’ Reciprocals and Distributives in Icelandic: E-Raising + Short Main Verb Movement

چکیده
We discuss remarkable constructions in Icelandic that have the distributive pronoun hvor ‘each’ common: reciprocal construction annar ‘each other’, and sinn their’, which also comes a ‘their each’ version. provide first detailed description of these constructions, particular their case word order properties, raise recalcitrant puzzles, then we what they say about syntax nonfinite verbs. Specifically, properties indicate verbs undergo short verb movement within phrase. That is, evidence indicates leftmost element alternatively or sinn, originates inside an object DP moves, by call e-raising, to base position antecedent with it agrees, before being stranded very antecedent. Nevertheless, appears left this element, even when is verb, showing must Spec,vP. In addition, interaction e-raising has important consequences for Case theory, as agreement marking take place PF.

Verb Movement in Kashmiri
Tensed clauses in Kashmiri are subject to the verb second constraint; the finite verbal element in these clauses always occurs in the second position, i.e. the position immediately following the first phrasal constituent. Like German however Kashmiri is argued to be underlyingly SOV. Evidence for underlying SOV word order comes primarily from environments where V2 does not apply such as non fin...

In this paper, we analyze a certain process of Verb to Infl raising in the Edo language of Nigeria. Verb raising has not been recognized in previous work on Edoid languages, such as Agheyisi 1990. From a theoretical perspective, its primary interest comes from the fact that it takes place only in one tense. As a result, it is easy to form minimal pairs with and without verb raising in the same ...
متن کاملV 1 , V 2 and criterial movement in Icelandic
In this paper I argue that V1 and V2 orders are the outcome of criterial movement to the CP layer of, respectively, a null OP and an XP. Under the assumption that discourse-related properties are encoded in the CP, I propose a cartographic analysis of the mechanisms determining V1 and V2 orders in Icelandic. I show that the labels V2 and V1 are too generic and misleading because they cover cons...
متن کاملNP-movement in Icelandic and Multiple Specifier Constructions
Icelandic NP-movement is Case-driven A-movement dislocating any NP with structural Case to the middle field. We argue that all NP-movement targets a Multiple Specifier Construction of TP. The hypothesis explains why the landing site does not correlate with the Case of the NP, why sentential adverbs show that all NP-movement targets the same phrasal category, and why the c-command relations unde...
